The typical American front lawn has been replaced by a large island, lush with spring-blooming trees, masses of shimmering perennials and grasses for later color. By combining the complexity of an English mixed border with the “almost natural” drifts of native perennials, the formality of the house is united with the natural beauty of the surrounding countryside.
The enclosed “English Garden” is very formal in its plan, with clipped hedges and geometric paths. An alleé of Ivory Silk tree lilacs divides the space into three: a formal Vegetable Garden, a Cutting Garden and the Quadrant Garden, where perennials and roses bloom exuberantly summer through fall.
